Re: Drop in form
It is tiredness I'm sure, not just physical but mental too. The team has been overperforming when you look at the history and monetary value of the squad (Rice excepted), and was always susceptible to a collapse like this if we lost a few first-team players though injury, or if individuals lost a bit of form.

Re: Drop in form
Just c&p from the match thread.

Where do you start.
In the post-morteum, shame Moyes didn’t give Longelo a start at LB. He wasn’t even on the bench so assume he’s injured, or sick.
We are just not functioning like we were and that belief isn’t quite there as before. There’s two or three out there who are ‘not right’, and the other players bar a couple is having an effect on the rest of the team.
Trouble is at present when you look at the bench there’s not much on there to improve on the starting 11 either.
What’s happened to Antonio. Started with six in six, but now one in twelve but it’s the performances which are really alarming. He’s gone from a beast shrugging off and out pacing three of their defenders to being easy to play against. Something has definitely happened, but what physical, mental? Soucek isn’t the same. Seems anonymous at times.
I don’t buy this tiredness. There have been breaks recently and Moyes has played a number of other personnel in the Europa League. Unless there’s a few with injuries out there who shouldn’t be playing, we need some fucking fire in the team.
There’s too many not doing it at the moment.

Re: Drop in form
January is important to get the signings in to get the levels back.

Lingard is an obvious one to get in plus one other.

Ake or Nat Phillips, I cant see Oggy getting back anytime soon to the form he was in.

Arsenal got about us, as Brighton did. We struggle with the press at times.

What goaded me last night was the lack of quality and composure up top, which was defined when Antonio's hapless cross to nobody like he wanted to be rid of the ball. To get the best out of Antonio he needs a foil, he was too often isolated chasing shadows and he looked knackered because of it. And when you are tired you make shit decisions. For a team like WH it seems momentum is everything...

You've basically answered your own question.

Zouma, Ogbonna and Cresswell injuries.

Drop off in form all at same time for Soucek, Fornals, Bowen and Benrahma.

And since returning from Jamaica Antonio looks like a League 2 striker.

Re: Drop in form
We always knew that this season was going to be difficult, with the size of the squad we have and with the extra european games.

We've punched way above our weight so far, and due to all the games we've played up to know it's starting to take its toll, hence the injuries and poor performances.

Take nothing away from Arsenal last night, they were absolutely brilliant in the first half.

Concerned yes, but every team has bad spells along.

Re: Drop in form
Every team hits a patch of bad form during a football season.
This includes the bigger teams like Man City, Man Utd, Lfc, Chelsea.
They are not as damaged when they are in bad form because the officials will give them soft penalties, deny clear penalties to opposing teams, brandish red cards etc to help them when they are in bad form.
This had lead to the false assertion that 'it is a sign of a good team that they can win when playing badly'.
They win when they are playing badly because the officials win the games for them.
Whilst we are not playing playing well at the moment no ref is going to win a game for us.

Scousers had one 3 defenders out and they turned to average last season.

Re: Drop in form
Missing 3 experienced defenders would affect any team , was bound to happen ,hope we have some signings lined up from the start of Jan
Big window for us , can’t afford the normal scattergun approach leading to last minute panic buys

Re: Drop in form
Definitely been a drop off, but we also had an incredibly friendly start to the season - and results like last nights don't look anywhere near as damaging if you're not taking two points from 9 at home against Palace, Brentford and Brighton

dealcanvey 9:36 Thu Dec 16
Re: Drop in form
Can’t put my finger on what’s changed.

Ok we have injuries particularly in defence but I though Dawson and Diop both had a good game last night.

Perhaps change in formation is needed?

We need signings in Jan and hopefully the club back Moyes in doing so.

Likes of Antonio know they have zero competition for their place. He needs a game or two on the bench to hit home that his performances are not good enough.

Benrahma also massively off the boil.

Cresswell is a bigger loss than we first realised.

As said below, Ashby deserves a start in the next game especially when we have no one else.

Tomas soucek, Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio should all be benched for the next game.

What did he say that? Can’t be good for team morale.

Re: Drop in form
They mentioned during the game last night we have made few changes to the starting 11 than any other team in the league. When you have your first 11 playing well that’s ok. When you loose players and have a small squad that’s a problem and it’s hurting us.
We’ve lost arguably 3 of our best players to injuries, all across the back 4 add to that a striker who is completely lost right now. That is the problem simple as

Re: Drop in form
Tomas soucek, Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio should all be benched for the next game. Masuaku can't play left back ever again. Granted we've been ravaged by injuries and suspensions across the back line but from what I saw of Longelo against Zagreb he's a much better option than him.

Why have we brought in Alex Kral ? Everyone can see Soucek has lost that bit of grit from last season. I'm not quite sure what's happening to Benrahma but it's not very fucking pleasing. And Antonio, fucking hell, I've never seen a bipolar footballer before him. One week he's unplayable the next he looks like a rabbit in the headlights. Absolutely lost.

Anyway, the January transfer window can't come quick enough.

Re: Drop in form
The only solution I can see is to look to the U23s, who have been doing very well.
Ashby, did well lats night and I'd bring him in while Coufal is out. Dawson and Diop are ok, I'd try Longelo on the left. But its the attack that are really letting us down. I'd give Okoflex a go up front, with Bowen, Fornals and one of Vlasic, Lanzini or Benrahma.

Re: Drop in form
We didn’t play great

Harsh to say Arsenal were there for the taking though.

Arsenal now sit 4th and we are 5th. It’s easy to believe the narrative that Arsenal are somehow poor but if they are then we must be really poor and yet the narrative is that we have had a great season so far and we have.

We need some reinforcements. Players out of form need to have a rest. We need to have some new ideas because we look slow and leggy.

We lost 2-0 away at Arsenal. It will happen again.

daveyg 5:26 Thu Dec 16
Re: Drop in form
Fornals has almost had the biggest drop of form. He was superb against Liverpool and had been scoring. Benrhama too.Antonio had lost it too. Maybe they all thought the were a top 4 side already. The only player who is,Rice, has held the team together. But Moyes needs to play some of his squad more often and a few youngsters too. He's too stubborn and plays certain individuals who are not anywhere near PL standard,Masuaku whislt certain new signings aren't given a chance.

Re: Drop in form
With being in 3 competitions it was bound to take a toll. We need a rest but we wont be getting one. Had you told me we'd be 5th at Christmas id have been well please, however to keep that going we do need reinforcements in Jan

Re: Drop in form
Chelsea wasn't a great performance. We got pretty fortunate at key moments. Last time we were decent was Liverpool.

Moyes has flogged the players out of form and into injury.

Re: Drop in form
spot on assessment . We need at least 3 players through the door in January . The team looks completely jaded and I hate to dig out Moyes after the job he's done. but he's seriously misguided if he doesn't want a big squad it is an absolute necessity in modern football. .
